An introductory training course to learn more about this teaching approach may be helpful for parents who want to support and advocate for their child at home and in school. The Subscriber Course does not require any prerequisites, and offers an initial overview of dyslexia and the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
In the Classroom Educator course, participants dive a little deeper and learn about the fundamentals of the Orton-Gillingham Approach. Additionally, individuals gain a better understanding of the basics of dyslexia, characteristics of a dyslexic learner, procedures for teaching reading and spelling to dyslexic students, and how to administer informal assessments. This Orton-Gillingham training course is offered several times throughout the school year, and it satisfies the coursework requirement with The Orton-Gillingham Academy at the Classroom Educator Level of certification.
For educators familiar with the Orton-Gillingham Approach
Educators who are already somewhat familiar with the Orton-Gillingham Approach may benefit from more advanced courses where they review basic concepts and learn some practical ways to implement Orton-Gillingham when working with students. Although available to all who meet the prerequisites, these courses are generally more targeted towards educators who need a more thorough understanding of how the Orton-Gillingham Approach can be used when teaching struggling readers. Many of our training courses also meet the necessary requirements for educators working towards certification in The Orton-Gillingham Academy.
After introductory courses, participants then move into more advanced morphology, creating in-depth lesson plans, implementing differentiation, and practicing diagnostic and prescriptive teaching with students. Although our Associate Coursework training does not have a prerequisite, this is a more intensive, nine-month class that offers a comprehensive understanding of the Orton-Gillingham Approach and helps educators learn how to teach struggling readers. In addition to these specific Orton-Gillingham training courses, ReadSource also offers workshops and Certified Coursework, practicum programs, and customized courses to meet the diverse needs of educators.
Training for The Orton-Gillingham Academy
Educators interested in completing Orton-Gillingham training courses to become certified with The Orton-Gillingham Academy can rely on ReadSource. A certain amount of coursework is required to achieve different certifications in the Academy, and our flexible Orton-Gillingham training classes give educators the ability to work on their own schedule to become certified in this teaching approach. Additionally, many of our training programs are taught by current members of the Academy who have first-hand experience utilizing Orton-Gillingham with dyslexic students.
Depending on your individual goals, there may be a specific Orton-Gillingham Academy certification that is right for you! The Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator Level certification (OGCE/OGA), for example, requires a practicum plus 30 hours of relevant coursework, which is fulfilled by our Classroom Educator course. To become an Associate Level (A/OGA) member of the OGA, educators also need to fulfill a practicum requirement, in addition to 60 hours of coursework. The 60 hours of Associate Level coursework can be achieved by completing ReadSource’s Classroom Educator and Beyond the Basics courses or by participating in the comprehensive Associate Coursework program.
